This Game Thinks Your Mac Is Haunted By Steve Jobs’s “Vengeful, Blood-Thirsty Spirit”

The system requirement for Dungeons of Dredmor on Steam.

Dungeons of Dredmor is one of my favorite games on Steam, a funny, impish, brutal yet utterly modern entry in my favorite gaming genre, rogue-likes. It only costs $1.50 right now, which rounding down for inflation is essentially free, so you might as well buy it. It’s a great introduction to that most sadistic genre of games, the rogue-like.

But Dungeons of Dredmor’s low, low price isn’t why we’re posting. Nor is the fact that it just got a free new expansion pack full of great new monsters and skills.

No, the reason we’re posting is because of that expansion pack’s new system requirements, which will elicit either a chuckle or an outraged roar from Apple fans.

Dungeons of Dredmor’s system requirements state, under the Processor heading:

Do not install game in any computer haunted by the vengeful spirit of Steve Jobs. It still walks the earth, thirsting for blood.

Some will think this is “too soon” and in bad taste, and yeah, it probably is. That said, this is a joke very rooted in core rogue-like concepts: in most of these kinds of games, when your character dies, it does become a blood-thirsty and vengeful spectre, and you have to face it in later games and kill it to continue forward in the dungeon. I’m pretty sure this is more supposed to be a nod to Mac rogue-like fans than offensive. Plus, it’s clearly meant to be pretty goofy. Notice that other system requirements say “Not compatible with Apple Lisa products.”
